Vis: The Island the Boats Are Really Going To

Stiniva's cliff gap (Europe's best beach, 2016), Komiža's harbor, the Mamma Mia 2 locations filmed in Sept 2017 - what the day tours show and what needs a night.

Updated August 2026

Strip the marketing from any “5-island” itinerary and what’s left is Vis: the furthest, wildest, and best of the Adriatic’s day-trip islands - a military closed zone until 1989, which is why it still looks like this.

The three sights the boats sell

Stiniva - the cove behind a cliff gap barely a boat wide, voted Europe’s best beach by European Best Destinations in 2016, which is when the world noticed. Day tours mostly show it from the water (the swell decides); reaching the pebbles means a steep goat path or a kayak. Komiža - the fishing town on the west coast that out-postcards everything on the mainland. The Blue Cave - technically on Biševo, Vis’s islet, and covered honestly here.

The Mamma Mia footnote, handled honestly

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again shot on Vis in September 2017 - Komiža’s waterfront, Stiniva, and the bays of Barjoška and Barjaca stood in for the fictional Kalokairi. The filming locations are real and walkable; the “Mamma Mia island” label on tour brochures is marketing shorthand for what is simply Vis being photogenic. If the film is your reason, the locations cluster around Komiža and reward an unhurried visit; if it isn’t, you’ll be photographing the same bays for their own sake.

Day trip or overnight

The Vis-focused day from Hvar (4.8/5 across 837) buys real island time - Komiža, a lunch stop, the caves - and is the honest pick over the five-flag sprint if Vis itself is the draw. What needs a night: Mount Hum at sunset, the military tunnels tour, Stiniva from the land side, and Komiža after the day boats leave. The island rewards both; it just rewards them differently.
